It’s Children’s Book Week!! YAY! If there’s one thing Ariel and I love, its books! We both love to read. We read together, we read separately. We just read.
So I’m super-glad to find out that there is such a thing as Children’s Book Week. (I personally think it should be Children’s Book Day every day, but that’s beside the point.)
I thought I would share a couple of our favorite children’s books with you and do a great giveaway! How’s that sound? I thought you might like that!
These are books that have been our favorites for years, some of them before preschool. I tell you, it was a walk down memory lane putting together this list! Fun, fun memories!!
Here are just a few of our favorite books:
You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You by Mary Ann Hoberman and Michael Emberley became one of our all-time favorites when Ariel was first starting to read. We still read it together sometimes, usually in very funny voices and accents!
All of the Mo Willems books make us laugh. Really hard!
Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin is an all-time classic.
Eric Carle is another perennial favorite. Ariel will always choose these books if a younger friend is over. She loves to read to her 3 year old cousin too.
I could not make a favorite children’s book list without including Sandra Boynton.
Her board books are legendary, but have you ever listened to her music? Oh, you’ve got to check it out! I found these books with CDs at Kohls a bazillion years ago and we have loved them for years!!
The Berenstain Bears are a flashback to my childhood, when I had them as Little Golden Books. Remember those?
The Boxcar Children are another favorite from my childhood. Ariel liked the first few of these, but then got bored with them. Wonder if she’ll ever pick them up again?
The Magic Tree House series wasn’t around when I was a kid, but I would have loved them as much as Ariel loved them! So much history and science packed into a few pages! Love that!!
This book was given to me at a baby shower when I was pregnant with Ariel. We have loved on this book for many years now and it is one of the books that I will save for grandchildren (someday…!)
What Makes A Rainbow? by Betty Ann Schwartz
Okay, now that you’ve had a peek at our bookshelf, what’s on yours? What books did you and your tween enjoy? You from your childhood, your tween from hers/his?

The book that I used to love as a child was “No Baths For Tabitha.” I always loved that book because it was funny, and showed kids that it is good to take baths, or you will get really really dirty lol. Since then, I have not been able to find that book anywhere for my kids. But, both of my kids love all of the Mo Willems books. They are easy beginning reader books, and are funny.
I also “like” The Tween & Me on facebook
I also “Like” this post (at the bottom of the post).
My favorites were the “Little House” series. I STILL read them.
My oldest is a big favorite of “Duck” and the click clack moo books. She recently picked out “Dooby dooby Moo” for her baby sister’s first birthday book.
It’s funny because I actually told her today that I would always buy her books. I may say no more toys, but would always buy her a new book!!
Wendy would love for you to read Fan girl
I’m the same way, Wendy!! I love that she gets the Scholastic book orders at school and I can tell her to pick out something she wants… up to $10. (she gets a math and budgeting lesson in the process!) On a sad, yes-I-am-older-than-dirt-note, I remember my mom giving me $1… back when Scholastic books were 25 and 35 cents each!
Do you have Chick-fil-A near you? They do a lot of educational books and toys in their kids meals. I have often ordered one for myself when they have a great series, just so I could get them for my dd! We got When You Give A Mouse A Cookie and several other similar books that way. They also have board books for the little ones, perfect for diaper bags!! Ariel’s favorite at the time was Harold and The Purple Crayon!
I like Alice in Wonderland because it’s so full of fun and whimsy.
Goodnight Moon is my favorite, probably because I was read it as a child.
Mine changes all the time, really. The pigeon books are wonderful. No David is a current fave.

Love the Box Car Children books. My grand daughter just finished reading the first one at school.
Those are some of my childhood favorites. I read all of them at least once I think!!
My FAVE children’s book is “I’ll Love You Forever.” Always makes me tear up!
“I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, As long as I’m living, My baby you’ll be.” So sweet!
Oh, you aren’t kidding!! LOVE it and tear up every time too… just reading that line totally got me!!
I LOVE “Moo BahLaLaLa”!!
One of my favorites too!!
I love The Kissing Hand. My daughter thinks it’s fantastic when she takes a kiss to bed with her…what a great story!
That IS a great story! My daughter loved that too. I used to wear bright red lipstick especially so I could leave a quite visible kiss on her hand when I dropped her off at preschool. {sniff, sniff}
We love “Kid Tea” by Elizabeth Ficocelli! It’s got a great rhyming rhythm, and goes through all the days of the week with fun colors associated with each of them.
Oh, that’s a new one for me! I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the recommendation!
i really like the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom because it helped my son learn his numbers!
Yes, that’s another great book!

There are so many kids books that I love. I really get a kick out of 15 Animals by Sandra Boynton. The ending is so unexpected it makes me laugh. Goodnight moon is great too. We like to find the mouse in each picture. Any book I read to my kiddos that helps them sit so I can snuggle with them is what I like!
Both of those are great! Have you seen Usborne books? I remember reading that some of them have hidden animals in them… like there’s a certain series that does. Kind of like the mouse in Goodnight moon.
And I agree. I am looking forward to summer when Ariel and I can snuggle in my bed and read for an hour… there’s just not enough time during the school year…and soon, she won’t want to, so I WILL take advantage of that this summer!! And, while I want us to read certain books, I’ll read whatever she wants!! Little kid books, tween books, it doesn’t matter as long as we’re together!!
I love Mr. Poppers Penguins, because it’s such a fun and unique read, Click, Clack Moo because it’s hilarious, and the Scaredy Squirrel series because it has so much for adults to enjoy while the kids are enjoying the basic story line.

I am going to be checking out a lot of new books, it seems! I only know Click, Clack, Moo out of those three. Guess it’s been a while since I read little one’s books!

I have many favorites but one that I remember clearly from my childhood is “There Are Rocks in My Socks, Said the Ox to the Fox.” It’s a goofy, rhyming story about an ox that can’t figure out how to get the rocks out of his socks. I laugh every time I read it. It’s also a good book for beginning readers.
Janelle would love for you to read Charlie Needs A Cloak by Tomie dePaola – Review and Natural Dye Craft
I didn’t know that one as a child…. I’ll be checking it out!

Bridget R. Wilson would love for you to read Panda-Monium! by Cynthia Platt
I loved that one too!
I have a lot of favorite children’s books, as a preschool teacher and a mom. One that always sticks out is Bread and Jam for Frances. I like the little rhymes she sings and it is a good lesson about having a varied diet, too!
Love that one!!!

More good books! I love those too!
I bought “Lisa and Lottie” at a garage sale when I was in grade school. I read it so many times that I’ve had to tape the cover back on. It’s a translation of a German story. They adapted “The Parent Trap” from the same book. I longed to be an identical twin after my many hours spend reading (and re-reading) this book.
Oh, I didn’t know that! My dd LOVES “The Parent Trap”! I’ll have to get that book for her… somehow.
